Welcome to the memorial page for

Marie Mikels

April 19, 1928 ~ August 21, 2015 (age 87) 87 Years Old

Milton and Marie Wulf lovingly welcomed their third child, Marie Margaret, into their Two Rivers home on April 19, 1928. Later, the family moved to Egg Harbor, Wisconsin, where they opened a store in what is now the city park. Marie grew up in the store, chatting with customers, occasionally sampling the candy display, and enjoying childhood on the beaches of small town Door County. In back of the store where the family lived, her parents taught her about her Lord and Savior. Eighty-seven years later, on August 21, Marie met her Lord and Savior face to face when she passed quietly into eternal life surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Marie graduated from Gibraltar High School and earned her teaching degree from Algoma Normal School. She earned her master's degree in cooperative learning from UWGB. She taught elementary school first in Sturgeon Bay and then at Sevastopol for a combined 25 years.

On August 22, 1948, Marie married her sweetheart, Robert Mikels, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay. They were married for nearly 66 years before Bob went home to heaven. Not wanting to spend another anniversary without him, Marie followed him to heaven just one day before their 67th anniversary. Marie will be missed immensely, but her family rejoices over the joyful reunion and anniversary celebration the couple is enjoying with each other and with the One who kept them together all those years, their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Marie was a beloved wife, esteemed mother, treasured grandmother, and adored great-grandmother. She valued the family togetherness and strong faith that united the generations. Marie was never shy about her faith, sharing with her family and others the importance of knowing and living for Christ. She had a generous and caring heart, always opening her home to anyone who needed encouragement or a handful of cookies.

Marie was active in her church and community. She was a member of Salona Club, the Historical Society, The Model A Club, and Homemakers, and was a Silverdale 4-H leader while her children were involved. She taught women's Bible study and catechism, and founded the church library at St. Peter's. She especially loved singing, and shared her love of music with her family. She sang in church choirs, as a soloist, and in Choraliers where she was a member for 25 years. In her later years, she and Bob enjoyed listening to the comforting messages of salvation in the old Christian hymns.

Marie is survived by her son John Mikels of Iola, WI, daughter Paula Roberts of Sturgeon Bay, son Peter Mikels of Sturgeon Bay, brother-in-law Herbie Mikels of Sturgeon Bay, 8 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert (2014), her parents Milton and Marie, her brother Harold Wulf (killed in action in WWII), and her sister Dorothy Knueppel of Sturgeon Bay.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 26, at Forbes Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay, WI with devotions to be held at 7:00 p.m. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 27, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay, with visitation from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.  Immediately following the service, there will be a luncheon served in the church, and then a brief graveside ceremony at Shiloh Moravian Cemetery on Shiloh Road in Sturgeon Bay where she will be laid to rest beside her dear husband.

The family would like to thank the staff at Pine Crest who assisted in Marie's care and made her feel at home. What a blessing they were in a difficult time! They would also like to thank Pastor Kolterjahn for ministering to her spiritual needs, and for her many friends who loved her like family. She loved you, too.
