Verna Elizabeth Sperber (Wierschke), 96, Sturgeon Bay passed away on September 9, 2021, in Green Bay. She was born May 31, 1925, in Algoma to Fred and Anna Wierschke. As a young girl, she attended school in Algoma and graduated from Algoma High School. She married Willard “Bill” Sperber on June 24, 1944; he preceded her in death on May 11, 2016.
Her life was full and varied. She enjoyed gradening, especially flowers, and chasing pigs that would get out of the pen (NOT). Among the things she liked doing were playing cards, bowling, golfing, Homemaker’s club, birthday clubs, spending time with friends, shopping and traveling. Verna also held a position as Treasurer of the Sturgeon Bay Township for several years. She also worked for the Door County Advocate among other various jobs.
Verna was a long-time member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay. As an active member, she taught Sunday School, was a member of the Ladies Aid, and helped get the church bulletins ready for services each week.
She loved her family very much and having get-togethers with them gave her much joy. Her children include Sandy Groth, Sherry Beschta (deceased), Susie DeGrave and Scott (Suzanne) Sperber. She was blessed with 14 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, parents-in-law, Emil and Amanda Sperber; daughter, Sherry Beschta; two sons-in-law, Richard Beschta and Lee Groth; sister, Delores Clark; and sister-in-law, Ruth Viste.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 15, 2021, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Rev. Carl Schroeder officiating. Entombment will be in the Shrine of Good Shepherd Mausoleum. Visitation will be after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church until time of services. In lieu of flower, a memorial fund has been established.
