Larry J. Whittle Obituary

Larry J. Whittle, 77, of Luxemburg, Wisconsin, was called home to our Lord and Savior on Thursday, July 31st, 2025 at Aurora Baycare Medical Center.

He was born on October 27th, 1947, in Postville, Iowa, to Adelbert and Darlene (Havelick) Whittle, who are 98 years young and nearing their 79th anniversary. They reside in Clive, Iowa.

Larry graduated from MFL High School in Monona, Iowa, in 1965. He attended Wisconsin State University - Platteville (now UW - Platteville) and graduated with a degree in Industrial Technology (with Art minor) in 1970. He started his career in graphic art and design in Beloit, Wisconsin, before moving to Madison, Wisconsin.

He married the love of his life, Mona (Terrones), on July 7, 1972. Larry and Mona spent a significant amount of time in the Northwoods of Wisconsin with family and friends. They welcomed two sons, Travis and Brandon. Larry and Mona prioritized family vacations and believed they would make a positive impact on their kids’ lives. As such, spring breaks were always spent in Florida. Door County, Wisconsin, became the go-to for camping, fishing, and boating. Larry took pride in his ability to launch and operate a 25-ft boat in any weather condition while alone or with family. He was a true captain of the sea. He enjoyed seeking out the perfect Perch hole, throwing an anchor, and setting the radio to an oldies station.

Through their vast and unrelenting travels, Larry and Mona taught their boys the virtue of working hard in order to play hard. Larry knew how to have fun and was a natural at it. He had a keen sense of humor and would fire from the hip without hesitation. He enjoyed the mechanics behind things and was incredibly gifted in math, physics, and engineering. He once disassembled an entire car engine in his parents’ garage just to see how it would go back together. He liked fast cars, fast boats, and pushing things to the limit.

Larry started a graphic design company in 1985 and successfully ran it until he retired in 2002.  Upon moving to Door County, Larry was able to explore his love of painting the beautiful landscapes, woodlands, and bay waters that he and Mona enjoyed every day. Lighthouses, sunrises, and sunsets were some of his favorite subjects. He became known as a Door County artist at local farmers markets and people would visit him every year from all over the country to see what he may have for them.

Larry and Mona enjoyed 53 years of being best friends. They raised two wonderful sons and were blessed with two sweet, beautiful daughters-in-law with whom they spent countless days traveling, fishing, playing cards, and watching sunsets. To cap off an already special family, they were blessed with four grandchildren who brought an entirely different light and love to their family.

Larry is survived by his loving wife Mona, his son Travis (Rebecca) and their two sons, Adelbert (Del) and Frank; his son Brandon (Kristin) and their two children, Gavin and Adalyn. He is also survived by his parents, Adelbert and Darlene Whittle, brother Douglas (Dianne) Whittle, sister Diane (Mark) Turczynski, and sisters-in-law Carol McNier and Julie Terrones. Lastly, he is survived by many special nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Larry is preceded in death by his father-in-law John Terrones and mother-in-law Marie Terrones. He is also preceded in death by his three brothers-in-law and best friends, Gerald Inks, Ricardo Terrones, and Jim McNier, his sister-in-law Linda Ambrose, and two special nieces, Cheryl Herold and Anna Turczynski.

Larry led a remarkable life and was highly talented as an artist, woodworker, and problem solver. He taught his kids algebra because he knew how important math would be to their success. He’d buy the biggest Christmas tree because he realized the value of a moment. In the end, he did everything possible to allow his family to live out their dreams. If it was broken, he could fix it. If someone envisioned a wood project, he could build it. If he saw beauty that uniquely reflected Door County or reminded him of his past, he could capture and paint it. His wisdom stretched far beyond a lifetime, and his storytelling, while sorely missed, will live on in our hearts forever. Most importantly, on top of all of his talents, accomplishments, and abilities, he will be remembered by everyone who knew him as an excellent son, wonderful husband, the greatest dad you could ask for, an amazing grandfather (pa pa), a hilarious brother, an outstanding cousin, the funny uncle, and a true friend. Our loss is truly heaven’s gain. We will love and miss you until we meet again. Now, go fish and paint in heaven. We’ll look for you in every radiant sunset. Every red Corvette will remind us of where we came from, and we will never forget it. Fair winds and following seas, Larry.
