Frank Bors Obituary

Frank P. Bors of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, died on August 7, 2022, at 86 years old. He was born in Gaastra, Michigan, on June 16, 1936, to Apolina “Paula” Staniszewski Bors and John Bors.

Frank spent his younger years in Gaastra carrying a pocketknife and salt shaker. Snacks back then were found in the apple orchard across the street from his family home. He spent a great deal of time wandering the woods, enjoying nature when he was not in school or doing chores. He cared for chickens and rabbits on the family farm. After grade and high school, Frank joined the Coast Guard and worked in their service for many years as a Petty Officer First Class.

He enjoyed playing baseball and was even able to train with the Detroit Tigers, one of his favorite teams, but never played professionally due to an injury. He also liked football; the Detroit Lions were his favorite football team. He loved a good wager if they played against the Green Bay Packers. He spent Sunday afternoons listening to the Door County League games on his radio.

Frank also raced sled dogs in Upper Michigan and built a team for his daughter. He took exceptional care of his dogs and rescued many from harmful conditions. He made incredible snow sculptures, polar bears, igloos, and a fortress wall for his daughter to play in and on when not sledding or snowmobiling.

Frank enjoyed fishing, even when the fish were not cooperating, and shared that hobby with friends.

He liked gardening and used what others saw as trash in the process, old tires, tubs, you name it, he could transform it into a beautiful garden piece. He was a fantastic storyteller and enjoyed sharing his life experiences, especially with his grandchildren.  He is already greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Apolina “Paula” Staniszewski Bors, father, John Bors, brothers: Joseph A. Bors and Stanley “Tim” Bors, sisters: Mary L. Bors, Sophie U. Bors Skrzyniarz, and Adeline C. Bors.

Frank is survived by his sister Joanne Rhino of Gaastra, Michigan, daughter Lynn Stewart of Saginaw, Michigan, daughter Paula (Julian) Foster of Fuquay Varina, North Carolina, and six grandchildren.

We thank his friend, Mary Franklin, for caring for him while his daughters lived out of state.  Also special thanks and appreciation goes to St. Vincent's CCU and Door County Medical Center for their attentive care and compassion for Frank. And thank you, Ascension at Home Care, for giving Frank the ability to live his final years at home. Especially his caregiver Jim and nurse Dioni.
