Eugene “Gene” Wetak, 88, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away on March 12, 2020, at Door County Medical Center. He was born August 20, 1931, in Sturgeon Bay to Edward and Joyce (Henschel) Wetak. On June 18, 1977, he married Mary Smejkal in Sturgeon Bay.
Gene worked as a diesel mechanic instructor at Northeast Technical College for many years. He also worked as a private contractor and consultant for Roen Salvage. Gene was very mechanically inclined and loved tinkering around with all kinds of gadgets. He also had a passion for woodworking.
Survivors include his wife; five children, Sharon (Gene) Sternard, Nancy Huffman, Scott (Michelle) Wetak, Wendy (Ronald) Cox, and Tracy Klotz; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Janice (Robert) King; sister-in-law, Debbie Peterson (Earl); nieces and nephews; and his cat, Brandy. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 16, 2020, at the First Baptist Church in Sturgeon Bay with Rev. Cory Dahl officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Forbes Funeral Home and from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services at the church on Monday.
