Jon P. Merz, 74, of Woodridge, IL and Egg Harbor, WI passed away suddenly on July 13, 2018, at his home in Egg Harbor. He was born Sept. 3, 1943, in Melrose Park, IL to Harold and Vivian (Klein) Merz. On Sept. 22, 1973, he married Corinne Comis in Burr Ridge, IL.
Jon grew up in Hinsdale, IL and was the fourth generation of his family to graduate from Hinsdale schools. He attended Eastern Illinois University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business and was a member of TKE, a Greek fraternity where he made lifelong friends. After college, he felt compelled to serve his country, so he enlisted in the U.S. Army, graduating from officers’ training school as a first lieutenant. While serving in Viet Nam, Jon was injured in combat and was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
Jon’s successful sales career with Honeywell and Singer Corporations was cut short when he suffered a brain aneurysm, which left him partially disabled. Despite chronic health issues, Jon and Corinne enjoyed many years of travel. They travelled extensively throughout the country and around the world. He especially loved his trips to Italy and Greece. During his life, Jon was an avid music fan, liked to fish, golf, and spend summers and holidays in Door County where he made many good friends.
Jon is survived by his wife Corinne of almost 45 years; a sister-in-law Marilyn Merz; a niece Meredith (Doyle) Devereux; a nephew Daniel (Ami) Merz; and great nephews and niece, all of Hinsdale, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Jay.
