William J. "Bill" Gary passed away peacefully with his family at his side Jan. 27th. in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was 81. Bill was born on Dec. 7, 1927 in Green Bay to Dr. Norman J. Gary and Mary Elizabeth "Bess" (Hall) Gary. He spent his childhood in northern Wisconsin, graduating from Eagle River High School. He then joined the U.S. Navy and made multiple Atlantic Ocean crossings on the aircraft carriers U.S.S. Randolph and U.S.S. Leyte. At the end of WWII, he returned to Wisconsin and entered Milwaukee State Teacher’s College (UWM) where he met and married Betty Konrad of Sturgeon Bay. He later married Helen (Loos) Young of Sturgeon Bay. His skills were many and varied. He worked for many years in the construction and steel industries, building many gas stations throughout the western United States. He later managed Jax Steel Center and Sturgeon Bay Iron and Metal in Sturgeon Bay. Bill also sold real estate for a number of years before retirement. Bill was active in the community, spending many hours on public service projects for the AMVETS, Eagles and Kiwanis clubs. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, winters camping in Arizona and living life fully with his many friends and family. He is survived by three children: Patrick of Scottsdale, AZ and Green Bay; Lynn (Duke) Ross of Magalia, CA; and Timothy (Michelle) of Madison. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Sarah Gary Rajek and Michael Gary, both of Green Bay; Spencer Gary of Denver, CO; Patrick Ross of Magalia, CA; and Julianna Ross of Phoenix, AZ; and five great grandchildren: Ethan and Aeryn Gary of Green Bay; and Logan, Bryce, and Christine Ross of Magalia, CA. He is also survived by four stepsons: Fred, Mike, Matt and Dan Young and their families. Visitation is at 1 PM on Friday, Feb. 6th at Forbes Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay. Services begin at 2 PM, followed by a celebration of Bill’s life after services. Burial will be at Fort Howard Cemetery Saturday morning at 9 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans. |
