    Norb D. Schachtner, 81, Sturgeon Bay died in Chicago, June 8, 2009 on his way to visit his daughter in California.  He was born December 7, 1927 in Watertown to Charles Albert and Mary (Daniel) Schachtner.On June 20, 1953, he married Shirley A. Zakowski in Milwaukee. She preceded him in death on December 15, 2008.
    
Norb served his country in the U. S. Army.He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in 1952 and 1968 from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.  Norb earned the academic rank of Full Professor in the Department of Community Affairs in 1975.He began his career with the Cooperative Extension Service in 1954 as the Assistant County Agent in charge of 4-H in Outagamie County. In 1956, he assumed the position of 4-H Club Agent in Racine County.  In 1960, he and his family moved to Door County where served as Agriculture Agent and later as office Chairman and Agriculture-Resource Development Agent, retiring in 1988.
    
Norb was always interested in serving his community starting in high school as National President of the Future Farmers’ of America. Throughout his adult life, Norb continued to be active in local and statewide leadership roles.  He is a past president of the Wisconsin Association of Extension 4-H & Youth Agents Association and the Wisconsin Association of County Agriculture Agents.  He was a past president of the Sturgeon Bay Board of Education, serving from 1971-1979. He was also appointed to various governors’ committees regarding the welfare of the Great Lakes and of Door County, whose decisions will affect generations to come. His belief was that the waters and beaches of the Great Lakes should be public and made available to all. Norb was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church and active in the Parish Council and School Association.  He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Sturgeon Bay Rotary Club.
    
After retiring from his role as UW Agricultural Agent, Norb continued in public service as Mayor of Sturgeon Bay from 1989 to 1995 and as a member of the County Board of Supervisors from 1993 to 1999.
    
Survivors include his four children, Ann Schachtner, Madison; Jean (Jim) Lauscher, Salt Lake City, UT; Glenn Schachtner, Green Bay; Lynn (Fazel) Jafari, San Diego, CA; six grandchildren, Jimmy and Josh (Jenny) Lauscher, Salt Lake City, UT; Andrew and Joseph Schachtner, Green Bay; Aryon and Ariel Jafari, San Diego, CA; a brother, Albert (Marilyn) Schachtner, Albuquerque, NM; a sister-in-law, Virginia Schachtner of Beaver Dam; and a brother-in-law, Ron (Betty) Zakowski of Wautoma. He was preceded in death by his parents and beloved wife Shirley; his four sisters, Dorothy Cox, Agnes Young, Blanche Haberkorn and Margaret Schachtner; a brother, Joseph Schachtner; and a grandson, Parker Lauscher.
    
Family and friends are invited to a visitation at the Forbes Funeral Home from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17 and after 10 a.m. Thursday, June 18, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. There will be a prayer service Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the church at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Anthony Birdsall, Rev. Carl Schmitt and Deacon Paul Zenefski officiating. Inurnment will follow at St. St. Joseph Cemetery.
    
Norb was an avid sports fan. He especially loved and supported high school athletics. He was also a supporter of and familiar face at the YMCA since its inception in Sturgeon Bay.  Therefore, in lieu of flowers, his children suggest that any donations be made in Norb’s name to the Door County YMCA, 1900 Michigan St. or the Sturgeon Bay High School Athletic Department, 1230 Michigan St., both in Sturgeon Bay. And, to honor his deep faith, donations may also be made in his name to Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 25 N. Elgin St., Sturgeon Bay.
