 Helen L. Suchy

Helen Louise Suchy, 87, of Sturgeon Bay was born to eternal life on March 6, 2010 at her cottage in Door County, Wisc. after suffering a massive stroke a week earlier while visiting her daughter in Shaker Heights, Ohio. Her children brought her back to the cottage so she could be at home.  Helen was born in Arpin, Wisc. on June 18, 1922. She was the eldest daughter of Rudy and Hazel Lehnherr. She grew up on a farm and graduated from Baraboo High School in 1940. She attended nursing school in Milwaukee, Wisc. and upon graduation accepted a position as a licensed practical nurse in Door County. She met her future husband Frederick W. Suchy at a “church” called the Nautical Inn and they were married April 17, 1948. They had a 3-year honeymoon building their dream cottage on the sandy beach of Lake Michigan.

Helen lived the majority of her adult life in Elkhorn, Wisc. She was a loving Mother of four children and worked as a nurse at Lakeland Hospital.  As the devoted wife of a high school basketball coach, she kept statistics for Fred and didn’t miss a game in 28 years.  She was also an avid fan of the Milwaukee Brewers, Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Badgers and Elkhorn Elks. She spent every summer at their cottage on Lake Michigan.  In 1983 Helen and Fred retired to Door County where Helen enjoyed an active retirement volunteering in her church, hospital auxiliary and hospice of Door County. She became a fan of the Sevastopol Pioneers and Sturgeon Bay Clippers and rarely missed a Door County League baseball game.

After her husband Fred died in 1986, she became an avid traveler and spent a lot of time with her family. Perhaps Helen's greatest joy was being a grandmother.  In the last eight years of her life, Helen lived with her children and her sister, Fran, and spent lots of time with her ten grandchildren.  Helen lived every moment of life to its’ fullest with a song in her heart and a smile on her face.  She will be dearly missed.

Helen is survived by her four children and spouses – Joseph and Joanne Suchy of Elkhorn, Wisc.; Marion & Gary Ciepluch of Shaker Heights, Ohio; Frederick and Manya Suchy of Milwaukee, Wisc.; Margaret and David Rose of Sturgeon Bay, Wisc; 10 grandchildren:  Kate, Sara, Big Mike, Eric, Alyssa, Alex, Lauren, Natalie, Mackenzie and Little Mike; 2 sisters Francis Rouse and Elaine Stephenson, sister-in-law Marion Thornton; brother-in-law Douglas Thornton 14 nieces and nephews, 3 granddogs – Scout, Sommer & Gradie and great granddog, Layla.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 20 at the Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church with Rev. Reeder Herrick officiating.   Burial will be at Bay Side Cemetery in Sturgeon Bay.  Visitation will be Friday, March 19, from 4-8 p.m. at the Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church and on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the church until the time of services.   Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Western  Reserve, Neighbor-to-Neigbor, or the Alzheimer's Association.
