Hazel Petrina

 
 

 

 
 

     Hazel Petrina 95, of Claybanks, passed away on Wednesday February 18, 2009 at home.  She was born July 4, 1913 in the town of Claybanks, to Otto and Carrie (Stegmann) Hanson.  On August 21 1943 she married John Petrina, the love of her life, at the Tanum-Forest Parsonage; he preceded her in death on December 24, 1977.
    
Hazel attended Salona School and graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1930.  She then went on to graduate from Door-Kewaunee Normal Teachers School and later received a Bachelors Degree from Oshkosh State University.
    
Her grade school teacher, Mrs. Esther Jorgenson, was her inspiration and role model.  Hazel began her teaching career in a one-room school house and was a grade school teacher at numerous schools in Door County including: Hainesville, Lake View, Salona, Forestville-Victory, and Sunrise Schools.  After retiring, she returned to Sunset and Westside Schools as a teaching assistant.  Hazel wasbaptized and confirmed at Tanum Church and later served as Sunday School Superintendent and Sunday school teacher at Tanum-Forest Lutheran Church for many years.  She was a member of the Ladies Aid and the Seekers Bible Study Group.  Hazel was a past treasurer of the Door-Kewaunee County Retired Teachers Association.
    
Hazel enjoyed watching her son, Lee, play in County League Baseball and attending her granddaughters’ school events.  Hazel was always delighted when her former students would recognize her and compliment her for having been a wonderful teacher.
    
Survivors include one son:  Lee (Kathleen) Petrina, Sturgeon Bay; two granddaughters:  Haley (fiance, Reid Scrimgeour) Petrina, CA, Wendy (Timothy) Patton, IA; one brother:  Donald (Edna) Hanson, Sturgeon Bay; one sister:Isabel Haegle, Green Bay; one sister-in-law:  Muriel Hanson; beloved nieces and nephews; all former students, each one of which was very precious to her.
    
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband; six brothers and four sisters-in-law:  Loyal Hanson, Grant (Elsie) Hanson, Ole (Agnes) Hanson, Forest (Julia) Hanson, Allan Hanson, Stanley (Elaine) Hanson; other in-laws:  Joseph (Mabel) Petrina, Anton Petrina, Frank (Lillian) Petrina, Anne Severin, Mary (Joseph) Kastner.
    
Funeral Services will be Saturday, February 21, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Tanum- Forest Lutheran Church, Rev. Phillip Peterson officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Friends may call at the Forbes Funeral Home from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday and then after 10:00 AM Saturday at the church until time of services.  A devotional service will be held Friday at 7:00 PM at the Funeral Home.  Online condolences may be offered at www.forbesfuneralhome.com. Memorials may be directed to the Tanum-Forest Lutheran Sunday School Program.
