  George M. Sawyer, 82, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away at home on Feb. 28, 2009. He was born on Sept. 9, 1926 in Sturgeon Bay to Joseph and Mabel (Carmody) Sawyer. On Oct. 22, 1955 he married Maureen Moore in Institute. She preceded him in death on July 2, 2008. George served his country in the U.S. Army during WW II and was a past member of the American Legion. He worked in various capacities for the Door County Highway Dept. for many years. George enjoyed hunting, gardening, and watching the Packers. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren’s sporting events. George was a great man of prayer and spent countless hours praying the rosary. He will also be remembered for the many fish boils he hosted. He always enjoyed the companionship of his dogs: Tuffy, Kelly, and Angie. Survivors include 6 children: Shelley Paul (Friend, Jeff Paul), Sturgeon Bay; Michael Sawyer, Montana; Jane (Dennis) Mueller, Algoma; Patti (Steve) Doell, Sturgeon Bay; Cathy (Scott) Helmle, Sobieski; Sharon Sawyer, Texas; 12 grandchildren: John, Michelle (Matt), Cynde, Brenda (Matt), Lacey (Nathan), Brock (Teresa), Tyler, Jessy, Robin, Meghan, Nathaniel, and Ethan; 9 great-grandchildren: Lauren, Sydney, Brennan, Brady, Sophia, Henry, Isaac George, Addison and Avery; 2 sisters-in-law, Millie Sawyer and Jean Sawyer, other in-laws: Karen (Chuck) Townsend, Bobby (Barb) Moore, Tommy (Maryann) Moore, Mike (Carol) Moore, Kenny (Jane) Moore, Tim Moore, and Barb (Ray) Prigge, Sharon Moore, and Joyce Klaubauf; and special novitiate friends: Brother Andrew, Brother John, and Karen. He was preceded in death by his wife, 2 brothers, Bill and Bob Sawyer, 2 sisters, Cal (Fritz) Bink and Evie (Shorty) Haen, 6 brothers-in-law and 5 sisters-in-law, Jack (Betty) Moore, Sonny (Jean) Moore, Jimmy (Jerri) Moore, Dale Moore, Danny Moore, Elaine (Dick) Klaubauf, and Ruby Moore; special friend, Father Phil.

Funeral and veteran services will be 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Institute with the Rev. Patrick Gawrylewski and Rev. Anthony Birdsall officiating. Entombment will be in the St. Joseph Mausoleum. Friends may call on Tuesday from 4-8 PM at the Forbes Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay. A prayer service will be conducted on Tuesday at 7:30 PM.Memorials may be directed to the Sisters of Bay Settlement and the Assumption BVM Congregation.
