Gene LeRoy Fittshur, 73, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away at home on Oct. 10, 2009. He was born on Sept. 29, 1936 in Sturgeon Bay to LeRoy and Fern (Weborg) Fittshur. Gene graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1955 and served his country in the United States Army, two years in the reserve and two years active duty (1953-1957). On Feb. 11, 1961 he married Marlene Corbisier. Gene joined the Army Reserve when he was a junior in high school and upon graduation in 1955, he served in New York as a skipper on an army VIP boat. After being discharged, he worked as a boilermaker, a Wisconsin-Michigan bus driver, a shipfitter at Christy’s Shipyard and later as an assistant superintendent. Gene worked at Sears as an appliance repairman and at Gambles and in 1969 became a part-time firefighter. In 1970, he opened his own business in appliance repair. In 1973, he joined the Sturgeon Bay Fire Dept. full-time and served for 27 years, retiring as a Lieutenant. After retiring, Gene spent many hours in his shop turning out beautiful wooden projects which he enjoyed giving away. He and his wife enjoyed many years together traveling out west searching for historic forts and enjoying the mountains. Gene was known for his good work and willingness to help anyone who called on him. Survivors include his wife, Marlene; two sons, Steven (Paulette Guenette) Fittshur, LassVegas, NV, Joseph Fittshur; DePere; one daughter, Gina (Dmitry) Epshteyn, Milwaukee; one brother, Robert (Pat Rothschild) Fittshur; two grandchildren, Josh and Marissa (Christopher Schwartz); one great-grandson, Ethan; close friend of the family, Jordan Crowe; sisters-in-law, Jennifer and Dorothy Corbisier; one niece; three nephews, two great-nephews, and three great-nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife’s parents, aunts, uncles, and daughter-in-law, Rita Crowe-Fittshur. Funeral and veteran services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009 at the Forbes Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay. Friends may call on Wednesday from 11:00 AM until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Unity Hospice and the Amvets. |
