Edwin Stephan 

 
 

 

 
 

     The Honorable Judge Edwin C. Stephan, 87, Sturgeon Bay passed away at Whispering Winds on June 10, 2009.  He was born in Sturgeon Bay on January 20, 1922 to Walter and Marie (Kubis) Stephan.  After high school graduation he attended the University of WI Oshkosh for four years.  In 1943 he married Joanna Schmelzle.  Ed worked at the Post Office in Sturgeon Bay where his father,Walter, was Post Master.  He enlisted in the Navy and served for two years.  During that time he was postmaster aboard the ship Presaido.  After that time he went to the University of Wisconsin Madison Law School where he earned his law degree.
    
Edwin returned to Sturgeon Bay and practiced law, was District Attorney for several years, and then was elected Judge of Door County.  He was Judge for the State Circuit Court for twenty years and reserve Judge for ten years.  Ed retired when he was 76 years old.  He belonged to the St. Joseph Parish in Sturgeon Bay and served as lector and communion distributor.  Edwin was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis, and the Wisconsin BAR Association.  He was also an avid golfer, bowler, and bridge player.
    
Survivors include Edwin’s wife:  Joanna; three children:  Susan (Edward) Hunsader, Sturgeon Bay, Greg (Cheri) Stephan, Sturgeon Bay, Mary (Clarence) West, Casco; seven grandchildren:  Alan (Suzi) Hunsader, Erin Hunsader, Phillip (Carrie) Hunsader, Corey (Erin) Stephan, Casey Stephan, Jonathan (Kaycee) West, Andrew West (Special friend, Justine Preedit); eight great-grandchildren:  Madeline, Peter, Kolin, Piper, Marin, Caitlin, Ainsley, Colin; one brother:  John Stephan (special friend,Pat Harvey), Appleton.  Edwin was preceded in death by his parents.
    
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Saturday June 13, 2009 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Dominic Peluse SCJ and Rev. Anthony Birdsall concelebrating.  Entombment will be at the St. Joseph Mausoleum.  Visitation will be from 4-7 PM Friday at the Forbes Funeral Home and after 9:00 AM at the church until time of services.  A prayer service will be held on Friday at 7:00 PM at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers memorial may be directed to St. Joseph Church and St. John Bosco School.
